The dangers are many. Increased age is asssociated with medical disorders that complicate pregnancy-hypertension , diabetes, renal disease. The tone of uterine / pelvic muscles can be poor -->delayed onset of labour and prolonged labour. There can be cephalopelvic dispropotion (fetal head and maternal pevis)--> Prolonged labour-->obstructed labor and its consequences. There can be big baby ,malpresentation of the baby, birth trauma to the baby. There is an increased chance of caeserian section to avoid the above complications. Above all increased maternal age is associated with Downs syndrome - a chromosomal disorder of the child leading to mental retardation. Antenatal conselling is a must.

You obviously know all the medical dangers..but I remember when I was 47 and I know without a doubt I didn't have the energy a young baby and later a toddler has the right to expect from its Mum...47 is just too old to become a good mum...also when the child is grown say 25 the Mum is in her 70`s cant be much help with Grandchildren etc...but will possibly need help in day to day care herself ...

There are many, and any doctor can explain them to you. Little girls are born with all the eggs they will ever have in their lifetime! As with all body parts, the eggs at age 47 will not be as healthy as the ones she passed in her 20s. Therefore, things are more likely to go wrong. Down syndrome I think may be the biggest risk. There are tests that can confirm or cancel out any problems.

As the female ages the risk of birth defects increase. There is a significant increase of problems as the mother reaches age 40.

The older the eggs the riskier it is for the baby. I do believe the most common issue is spinabifida and downsyndrome. At her age, she would be routinely screened by a prenatal blood test to rule this out. She is also more susceptible to conceiving twins.

Down Syndrome and other birth defects. Research it thoroughly and discuss with your doctor and husband before becoming pregnant and be sure you're mentally prepared to deal with the outcome whatever it is.'
