It's a mix, while it allows public intrest and people to see show, as well as be able to attened and not have to re-arange ther life for a two week run. As well as other pluses mentioned.

On the other hand, this holds up theater from other shows being done. There are only so many spaces.

I don't understand the question; how could a long-running production possibly be bad? If it's running for a long time, it's because it's successful and people are turning out to see it. Getting butts in seats is what the business of theatre is all about. Even if people are "only" going to see Broadway mega-hits or "legendary" shows like "The Mousetrap" in London, if they have a positive experience of one show, they'll likely come back to see another.

They are great for theatre - How could it be anything but good? They bring in a valuable income and provide a great learning ground for yound professionals coming into the industry.

Long running shows also help provide an indicator of how well the West End is doing by comparing like for like sales. Phantom for example attracts the same type of audience year on year and a true comparison can be sought as to whether sales are up in 2006 compared to 2005 for example.

Good, so long as they're still packing the house. If people want to see it, let 'em come! Especially considering that there are a lot of us who don't live in London or New York City or anyplace that tends to have standing casts...it's nice knowing that if I go to Chicago next year I'll still be able to see Wicked again.

I think they are. Long running productions, especially in New York and London, help bring in tourists. They also keep actors, techies, musicians, ushers, costumers, etc... employed for a longer period of time.
