I'm not sure that it's hate, it may be fear that they could end up that way, a sort of denial.

I think its more of a lack of understanding - people wonder how the homeless end up living on the streets - the first thought when you see them is usually something to do with alcohol like if you give them money they are just going to drink it away... many homeless people have mental illnesses and I guess there is a stigma about that also - personally I have trouble understanding why people end up on the streets - surely people dont choose to end up there so how does it happen? I dont think people HATE the homeless but they do feel very uncomfortable around them and as I said in the first sentence it just comes down to a lack of understanding.

I don't hate the homeless, many are in shelters that had some misfortune in their life and are trying to begin again.
Others won't go into a shelter, they want to live homeless and panhandle for money to buy drugs These people I pity but won't support.
I also don't think much about a "obviously" able to work person standing at a busy corner with a sign.
I guess I am equating beggars with homeless that is a assumption on my part.

I don't think most ppl hate the homeless. I think it's the fact that in some states mainly liberal California has tons of homeless support programs that helps them clean up , feeds them, gives them a place to stay , and even offers some form of training that will assist them in not being homeless anymore, but most of them take advantage of the resources given to them and they money they are given for drugs and alcohol.

For the most part, there is really no reason to be homeless in America. It ultimately comes down to the willingness to help ones self. You can't fall apart when you get a curveball in life you just have to re-adjust your swing and hope for a home run.

So to answer your question most people have a problem with the homeless cause they dont try to help themselves.

I have no objection to the homeless per se. In fact, I feel sorry for them.
What I don't like is the attitude you get from some of them. A lot of the ones you see around town seem to be drop-outs, maybe on smack or alcoholics. These ones don't appear to want to better themselves, they just stick a hand out, ask for my cash, then abuse me verbally when I don't give, or give less than they want.
I know it's a difficult cycle to break for them, but doing nothing won't help that.
In UK, there is a magazine called The Big Issue. Homeless people are encouraged to sell this on street corners and make a small profit that way, which gives them a reason to get up each morning and do something, and the possibility of getting a roof over their head sometime.

I don't dislike homelss people - I DO dislike drop-kicks who expect to do nothing all day, then want a hand-out from people who work.

There was a lady ( I use the term loosely) in Toronto who was know as " The Shaky Lady" as she would shake and rattle uncontrollably and appeared to be virtually helpless . She was a fixture begging on the street with a sign saying she would pray for you if you gave her money . One day a Toronto Sun reporter doing a story on bums..er beggars and vagrants..er Street people made her the subject of his story and followed her after she completed her day.Well it seemed this woman got up and walked away as if she was in fine health. She then went to her apartment which she shared with her two 30 something sons . They even had a big screen TV, I have a 20".
The next day when the reporter confronted her about what he had learned as she was doing her shaking routine , she again made a miraculous recovery and chased him with her trying to get a smack at him.
I don't fault you for feeling sorry for these people as you must be a compassionate person ..But these people count on people like you to take advantage of...

It is very easy for people to judge them and say it is their own fault for being in a homeless situation. That way, people can alleviate any guilt and feeling of responsibility for helping them. Sad. It's a head in the sand mentality. I don't know how to solve the homeless problem in the U.S., but I try to be sympathetic to their plight and feeling of hopelessness.

See a lot of answers that they don't "HATE" the homeless, understand the reasons why they are homeless and pick a site to help. Or get your butt out there and do something about it. I did.

I've had homeless people ask for money because they are hungry while coming out of the grocery store and I offered to give them something to eat and they said they wanted me to give them money not food ( when they just asked for money for food).
One of my friends mom gave homeless man food as well. She gave him bread, ham, cheese brand new cause she had barely gone out of the store, while the man accepted it at the moment she follwed him to see where he was going and he threw everything she gave him in the trash (new). What else is there to think about these people.

I do not hate the homeless.
I do hate panhandlers that are strung out on dope or booze who beg for money and are pushy about it. They never remember you and hit on you all the time for cash. And then you see them later with a 40 oz beer or staggering around high as f*ck. Thats what I hate.
