Friday, Saturday, and today she noticed this painful, hard bump on her arm where the IVs were being put in and stuff. She called her doctor and they said it was an infection. Not from the blood transfusion, but from the IVs. Can't she do something legally? Her arm is all bruised up, and its painful, and the bump is getting bigger. She should sue the hospital. Haven't they heard of sterilization??

Infections in hospitals happen. They just do. Are they addressing it? Is she getting better? She may be bruised because of trying to find the vein for the transfusion (it's a big needle particularly compared with say a typical blood donation). Before you start a suit, wait until she is out of the hospital and give the entire experience a once over and decide about the quality of care and what the outcome was for your issues. Then decide.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Hey god bless your mother. There is no legal action against this.I was in the hospital with iv's for 6 days and i had the same reaction. It is very painful, and bruised,it took a while to heal. This happens to people often and the facts are the iv's saved her life and with out an iv a blood transfusion is not possible. They are sterile but of course some germs are very possible, they can leave an iv in for 72 hours. They will try to leave it in as long as the vein allows to avoid the process of putting in another ,which as well is uncomfortable for the patient. Be happy she is alive, and suing the hospital would be a complete waste of your time. They are so protected with documents that she has signed in order for them to do what they needed to ,to save her life.As far as i'm concerned they did their job, she's alive right?

Why sue the hospital? It doesn't sound like anyone was negligent, and the infection doesn't appear to be life threatening. It should clear up with medication and the bruising and pain will go away. Suing the hospital will only add to the problem of rising medical costs.

If you figure out that IV needle is the source of infection I believe that you have the right to sue the hospital. Either you or your insurance company are paying a lot of money to make sure every thing is being done properly at the hospital and any discomfort caused by their negligence should be compensated for.

No, she should go to the doctor and get the infection cured.

The IV needles are always new, not re-used, infections can happen from 100's of sourses

With all medical treatments it is often possible to have small side effects and normal people understand this and the first thing out of thier mouth is never who can we sue.

this is part of the problem with our society.

Some times infection can start after you leave the hospital, how do you prove when it started. No Attorney would take a case where something can be caused by a natural occurrence or where it cannot be proven where the fault lies.

did her doctor treat the infection?

Unless mom's arm falls off, or she loses functioning in that arm or any part of the body and it can be traced to the infection.....don't expect to find many attorneys willing to pursue the case. YOu can always shop around the attorney listings

again did her doctor treat the infection? he should have treated and cured it

here's the thing you need to realize:
she had a needle in her arm. if anyone walked into the hospital with a cold , the cold virus could get onto her arm and up to the needle. when she moves around, the needle moves too. in and out. in and out. so the cold virus can make it into her puncture hole causing an infection.
go to the local doc.. he can give her something for the infection (or cut it out first).
