I wrote a small paper on this when I noticed so many people thought it was about satanism... those people forgot to look at the history of gothic style. The style is a phisical showing of the philosophy... here's the paper on the philosphy... pretty short so it could be expanded upon much further:
The nature of Goth
As time goes on, I see more and more people embrace Goth and claim it as their way of life. I however have rarely seen someone who actually understood the nature of Goth and it's roots, much less what it means to be Goth. I have however seen many people who undsertand what it means to be Goth, yet they have no clue that they themselves are fitting of being called Goth.
Melancholy... Rage... Death... Evil. These are the words that describe the imagery that come to most minds when they think of Goth. Those who have sought to embrace it have often turned to shells of what they once were as they partake in the flavors of the dark side of life... including lust, drugs, vampireism and embracing of twisted forms of wicca that nearly parralel satanism. Their minds often become filled with contempt and disreguard for the world around them that they now only see as dark and corrupt. They begin to seek out this darkness and as they approch it, they themselves become consumed by it and the darkness manifests itself through them. They go out of their way to show their dark nature through both their actions and their outer appearance. They wear it as if it is a badge of honor by shrouding themselves in black clothing and painting their faces to resemble the death they feel inside. This is not the true face of Goth, though the nature can be seen through the forced shadows.
The nature of Goth is not found within the embracing of that which is dark and evil, it is a life of accepting that which resides within you... within everyone. It is seeking understanding of the nature of the soul and the taint that corrupts it. It is not about what you do or what you have done, but more it is about knowing what you are capible of... seeing the darker side of your own soul and accepting it's existance, yet not yeilding to it's lure. The Goth mind acknowledges the evil nature within themselves and knows that all of their life they will be in eternal strife with their own nature.
Understanding your nature is not the end of understanding all that is Goth, but it is the begining. Those who can come to grips with their own nature and see what could become of them are then faced with the choice that all people make. When you finally see evil, you cannot ignore it's existance no matter how hard you may try. You become aware of the mark it's left in your mind and the damage it's already done to your soul. You are left at the crossroads which define what you will become. To embrace the darkness and let it rule your life or to take a stand against it in an attempt to save that which is still pure within your soul.
Facing this stuggle head on is the true nature of Goth. It is an attempt at purification through understanding your own tempations, the sins that burn from deep within trying to control your life. It's about knowing the evilness that is apart of you, what it beckons you to do, and resiting its call. Yes, darkness is intertwined with Goth... Yes, at the very root of Goth is seeking the darkness within... And yes, it is a very somber and painful affair of the mind... But no, Goth is not about becoming a dark shell of what you once were, it is about becoming whole by denying its continued rule over your life and seeking the purity that you are missing. It is a return to God as the root of Goth is the stuggle of the soul and finding the answer to the question; Which part of your soul will become dominate... the glimmer of purity remaining or the cancerous taint that continues to grow?
(yeah... the paper was kind of over dramatic but then again, so is Goth. BTW, don't trust wikipedia on this topic... whoever wrote the entry there has neglected a lot of how the style developed)

Nebai did a great job covering the mindset. It seems like "goth" is a threefold thing. There's the mindset that Nebai covered. Any real goth fits that pretty well. Then there's also the style that so many people try to do and call themselves goth. There's also the music as well. It seems there are a lot of people that are into the fashion and sometimes the music and call themselves goth. There are also those individuals that completely imbrace the lifestyle, including the mentality.

Todays "goths" are just people who want to feel like they are different, but in reality they are just conforming to another kind of lifestyle. Several hundred years ago Gothic was a religion. Then it became a style of architecture and then a style of dress. It has nothing to do with the original meaning of it. Its just a bunch of people who want to feel different and show the world that they are unique, which is a desire of nearly every human.
