First, let's say that you goofed, and did not use the REMOVE SAFELY thing... Is there any data that you might loose forever? Do you know how to reformat the device?

Let's assume that it won't BREAK, but the "directory files" could get broken. That means REFORMAT.

It is unlikely that you will cause hardware damage if you remove a flash drive while it is access it. However, there is a possibility that you could corrupt the FAT directory, which may make it look like it is unaccessible.

Should it ever stop responding, simply perform a format on the drive.

Flash drives hook to your USB port and are universal plug and play, which means they allow hot swapping IE: plugging and unplugging while in operation. the only problem you may have is the possibility of losing some data (Remote possibility) in your flash drive if you were in the process of transferring data at the time of the disconnect, but there won't be any problem caused to your computer.Plus it's a good idea that the executable you install on your flash drive, make it resume supportable.

Since there are no moving parts to the flash drives, I can't see any mechanical reasons for a hardware problem.

Depends. Windows XP is far more tolerant of USB devices being improperly removed, but removing the drive while it's trying to write is asking for trouble.

Generally, there is no Hardware problemos....but if removed many times .. your windows might not detect it..
This can be easily resolved by restarting Windows.
