Lonely. Does it have a true antonym? I have asked friends, who include english teachers and librarians, and I cannot seem to find a single word that means the opposite of lonely. Sure, there are words like extroverted and gregarious, but they only mean one is friendly, not un-lonely. Lonely describes the feeling one gets when one is alone and craves company, so I am looking for a word describing the feeling one gets when one is around people and craves to be alone. I get this unnamed feeling frequently, so there must be a name for it. I don't think crowded quite satisfies it, because if one is crowded, one can still get space without being alone.

This is a great question. To me lonely and lonesome are two entirely different words and I don't think there is an antonym for lonely. Solitude denotes a choice and a will to be in a lone state but that is not quite right either.

Lonely has several meanings, and other than "unlonely", which isn't a commonly used word, there is no word which is an antonym for all meanings. Befriended and included are pretty good antonyms.

You are looking for an antonym to "lonesome".

Do you think "reclusive" is the word?

There is one non-word that should be a word that might fit: "solitudinous".

You'll find it in context in the definition of "cerebrotonia" I attached.

If I could catch a rainbow
I would do it just for you,
And share with you its beauty
On the days you're feeling blue

If I could build a mountain
You could call your very own,
A place to find serenity,
A place to be alone

If I could take your troubles
I would toss them in the sea,
But all these things I'm finding
Are impossible for me

I cannot build a mountain,
Or catch a rainbow fair,
But let me be what I know best,
A friend who's always there
