I received a lot of shy looks and stares from people while shopping, and I believe it was because of the clothes I wore. I had on a pair of faded jeans shorts and a sport bra and cute little pair of sandals. The weather was great, temp in the mid 80s, a very nice day to attend a car show. Could it be that I was taking looks away from the cars on display or upsetting some of the entrants wives/girlfriends, or the patrons in the stores while doing my shopping? Were the stares and glares from jealousy or admiration? When I would look back , I would get the shy glance and immeditate look off into space or look to check their shoes and turn away. Am I being too bold or slutty, breaking some kind of dress code for the Seniors of Smalltown USA?

Depends. If it was obvious that the bra was a bra, and not an athletic top, then you may have looked trashy. Underwear is called that for a reason, it's supposed to go under your clothing.
The exact outfit you described sounds more like something that you would wear to a beach or to the pool, not a car show. I doubt it had anything to do with taking away from the cars, or jealousy. It sounds more like it was just people who thought you looked inappropriate for the event. The looks were more amazement than admiration.
If it bothered you, and I'm guessing it did since you posted this question, next time throw on a tank or cami to look a little more conservative. For most people, it's the bare midriff that draws the attention, so cover it up during the day if you aren't going swimming.

I suppose a lot would depend on the "Modesty" level of the garment. As with much of the clothing for women today, the terminology used to describe a particular piece of clothing can be very misleading. Such as the use of bra in "sports bra". I have a couple of sport bras that are more modest and cover more breast than a couple of blouses I have.

It may be that people are uncomfortable with the fact you are walking around with a bra on. It doesn't matter that it's a sports bra, it is designed to wear under clothes. It would be ok to wear to the gym or out running, but while shopping, that is a little crazy. Personally, I would be uncomfortable but hey, if you are comfortable wearing it, than by all means wear it. :)

Sports bras are made to be underwear,

I realise that the current fashions have sports bras as shirts and panties or boxers sticking out of the top of pants,
but for many people,
it is just uncomfotable to see someone in their underwear in public.

take pics of yourself wearing those clothes or have a friend take pictures and then u can look at them and decide for urself. (pics are better than a mirror in this situation) if u decide u like the look, keep it! it doesnt matter what other people think. (unless the 'other people' is ur boss for an uptight job :-P)

You will not feel comfortable if you are being looked at... So better save yourself the headache and put on what you think both decent and comfortable.

If you are doubting yourself if you looked too sl*tty then you sure didn't look confident enough to pull it off. What you are wearing is not so important, it is how you act in your clothes what counts.

A bra is UNDERwear; no matter how you wear it, it should be under your clothing. Why don't you wear a halter top instead? It would look nicer.

it is a bra... not different than any other bra
and the job of a bra is to support your breasts it isn't a fashion statement

sounds like you obviously like the attention that it gets you
