Basic driver knowledge about their vehicle should include: What the little dials on the dash mean; what do all the switches and buttons do; what information is on the little sticker on the bottom edge of the driver's door; what to do in the even of an accident; where are the spare tire, jack and lug wrench located; how to check your oil and other fluid levels; how to add oil, coolant and other fluids; what are the different colors of the various fluids in your vehicle so that if there is a leak you can tell what is leaking; how to change a bulb; what is the recommended tire pressure; how to check tire pressure; how to add air to your tires. Some might say you should know how to change a flat, but frankly, if you're a small woman driving a vehicle with huge tires like an H3 (and there are many!), knowing how to change a flat is moot since you probably can't lift the damn tire anyway. I have a hard time lifting the 31" tires on my Jeep and I'm 5'9 and 150 lbs. But it doesn't hurt to know how to change a flat.
Of course, there is a lot more you can take upon yourself to learn, but these are the very, very basic things you should know about your vehicle when you will be driving it on a regular basis. AND as simple as it might seem, an owner's manual is a valuable tool. Most of these issues can be explained right there in your owners manual. If the vehicle didn't have one when you bought it, they are fairly easy to come by from a dealership or online.

If more people would ask that question. #1 general inspection walk around tire tread air pressure gauge. look in the store window reflection high low beam turnsignals turn car around tail brake light reverse lights and rear turnsignals. #2 actual inspection. working flashlight, open hood after the engine has cooled off over night in the morning is a good time look into the brake fluid resv. fluid color should be clear, if not get the brake fluid changed every 3 years. pull the dip stick out of the motor wipe it off and reinstall it wait a second or two pull the dipstick back out and read how much oil do I have and can I see light thru it? Black thick oil needs changing look at the sticker from the last oil change. Please change oil every 3,500 miles. Look at the engine drive belts cracked frayed have to be changed if you do not know what a good belt looks like the auto parts store will be glad to show/sell you one. It is a good idea to Buy an extra drive belt. look at the coolant tank fill with the correct fluid check the actual radator fill it up too and look at the cap for cracked or swollen rubber, Put good cap back on . start the engine get used to the sounds on start up cold a little clicking that gos away 20/30 seconds is ok. If the car has an automatic transmission and has a Dip stick pull dip stick out wipe the stick with clean paper towell examine what rubbs off the stick and smell it too. Oily smell is ok burnt like electrical is not ok. If possable while running remove the cap on the powersteering resv and check fluid level running. #3 Nice things to have on a road trip. Basket in the trunk with that drive belt's saftey reflectors or flares duct tape, electrical tape, combo screwdriver 6 in one has two nut driver sizes in the handle wirecutter fence pliers . one gallon of drinking water can be used for overheated motor, unopened qt of oil tighten the lid and place any oils in plastic zip lock bag. Extra! buy a 3 lb fire extinguisher. another monster flash light for the trunk. can of fix a flat (air compressor jumper box) recharged monthly

Unless you have magic tires, you WILL get a flat someday.
Today is a good day to do a "dry run". Just so you know, that you can.
Check the engine oil, trans.fluid, coolant, tire pressures, belts condition, lights.
