It isn't the earphones that act as an antenna - it's the leads leading to the earphones. You can check this out for yourself by listening to an FM station and raising or lowering the leads - the signal will get either stronger or weaker/distorted. There's a simple (probably capacitive) coupling from one of the lead wires, to the RF side of the Walkman or whatever you have. The coil inside the earpiece is the earpiece's 'miniature speaker' coil.

Earphone does NOT work as antenna. You are talking about wireless earphones and they have miniature antennas so that you can receive the signal from your walkman without the use of wires. An earphone + antenna = Wireless earphone. Earphones and antennas are two different things. It just that when you put antenna along with earphones, it becomes a wireless earphone. To make that possible, walkman also has a transmitter tuned to the frequency of the receiver. Hence, the receiver in the earphone receives the signal from the transmitter of the walkman and passes on the audio signal to the earphone, which infact is simply a small speaker.
There is no antenna in wired earphones.

they put the antenna inside of the earphones. they do that so that you would have to buy the earphones sepparate. they just want to take your money. they probably charge like $30.00 for the antenna earphones.
