Does anybody have information concerning HMS Surprise during WW11? I believe my great uncle Horrace Swinerd served on board and seem to remember my mother telling me that the ship was torpedoed in the North Atlantic - is this true?

Only mention I can find of a 20th Century Surprise is this

Surprise, launched in 1916, was an Yarrow Later M class destroyer. She served in World War I and was sunk by a torpedo on 23 December 1917.

Which makes it WW 1 NOT WW 11

The Yarrow Later M class were a class of 7 destroyers built for the Royal Navy that saw service during World War I. They were based on the preceding and successful Yarrow M class with minor alterations; notably reduced beam to compensate for increased displacement and a sloping stern.

one of these ships was the Surprise - Completed 1916, torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat off Maas light ship on night of December 22 / 23 1917

I presume you mean World War I. There have been 7 ships in the Royal Navy named HMS Surprise. The one you'd be interested in is the Surprise, launched in 1916. She was a Yarrow Later M class destroyer. She served in World War I and was sunk by a torpedo on 23 December 1917.
