I do see your point; we don't 'hate' muslims, not in the way we think we do. The government could turn around tomorrow and say the problem is with jews or christians or sikhs or whatever, people just nod their heads and agree. When the cold war ended we needed new enemies. I don't understand where americans are coming from; they can't really make judgements if they've never experienced Islam for themselves..

don't get all nasty though.. it's not the right way to go about it.. you can fight but play it by your own rules.. thats the key

You mention a lot of issues in your question, I'm not sure how to answer most of them, but on your initial point about the muslim veil and jack Straw.
Although I agree that there is alot of bandwagon jumping going on here- I don't see that because the issue was not raised five, ten however many years ago that makes the issue invalid now.
I think many people, muslim and non-muslim alike, welcome the chance to discuss this issue.
You say Islam is not a culture, but there are different factions of Islam and those differences arose out of different cultural influences- such as black american muslims might have different perpectives on their culture than a third generation pakistani shop owner in lancashire.
As a non-muslim stuggling to come to terms to the huge shift in perspective forced upon us by extremists, what i really want to hear is the voice of moderate, peace loving muslims who simply want to get on with their lives, earn a living, and raise their families without other people causing them difficulties.
I feel the media feed the voice of extremism and not moderation, and don't emphasise that most muslim women do not wear the veil and would not want to. I take it we mean the veil that covers the face and not just the head.
I had muslim (Iranian) friends years ago and know that they are not all screaming hatred and resentment at the west, neither do they all keep their women in the kitchen- what we need in this country is a balanced appreciation of how the vast majority of muslims are god-fearing, law abiding, hard-working, tolerant and peaceful people.
As for Jack Straw, he has the right to ask someone to uncover her face, he speaks to his male constituents this way, and so should expect the same from his female constitiuents.
That's my perspective.

Well, you deviate from the intial question in that winding and poorly written rant there, but to answer the first question:

I don't think Msulim women should have to remove their veils, no. I loathe everything the veil stands for, from a feminist position, just as for me, Islam is a religion I disagree with because of the way it subjugates women. But more than all that I believe in freedom of religious expression. If Muslim women choose to wear the veil they should be allowed to do so, just as Christian women should be able to wear a crucifix if they wish (thinking of the Fiona Bruce debate here).

If Jack Straw had merely asked if they would mind removing their veils when he was talking to them, that would be an entirely different matter. Maybe he did, I do get the feeling that this has been blown all out of proportion.

As for the rest of your detail there.....If you don't like people making generalisations about your religion, don't make them about our culture. I won't even go into how disgustingly sexist it is to imply a woman deserves to raped for the way she dresses.

There are many great aspects to western culture, but if you don't appreciate them, you have a great option - leave.

You are right, muslims did not all come from warring countries, Islam brought war to them and than said convert or die.

I believe Islam is the answer to all the world's problems, The quicker it becomes the global religion the better.
