Actually it's not just cola that's bad for your bones - it's ALL FIZZY DRINKS. They all contain phosphoric acid which drains the calcium from your bones.
I had a case of a little boy who usually eat/drank really healthily - went away on holiday and the only change was that he was drinking fizzy drinks and he started getting growing pains in his bones. Once he stopped that and took some homeopathic phosphoric acid they stopped!

It's not the cola that's the problem it's anything containing phosphoric acid.

Better to stick to water!! Your mum is right.

Funny you should ask that. A friend of mine just put a recent study about this very thing in her LiveJournal.

It is indeed true that cola will leech calcium from your bones. The calcium that nature puts in your bones is not the same as the calcium you get from supplements, and even though getting extra calcium is good, it's no replacement.

Your mum is right. Imagine that!

Your mom, out of concern for your health and out of love for you, is putting one over you.

But, here are the facts:

1. Each can of Coke (or carbonated soft drinks) contains 8 teaspoon of sugar.
2. They contain Phosphoric Acid to induce thirst and keeps you coming back for more.
3. Sugar is addictive. So, you reach for coke everytime. 'Just can't stay away' - is the reason.
4. Caramel present in coke is apparently a cancer causing agent in abnormally high quantities. Of course, the amount in a coke can could be harmless.
5. Now they are supersizing their cans. This means, they want you to consume more and more. Lifestyle advertising as if it is a cure-all and it is a must for fun in life are not helping the matter.
6. The empties are damaging the environment big time. Don't contribute to that. Do your bit and stay away from soft drinks.

Calcium depletion? ........naw, don't believe it.

Stay with municipal water. It goes thru so much test before they release it to the public for consumption that it is safe to drink. And, lots of it.

In N.America, don't waste money on bottled water either. You are damaging the environment with the empty bottles. In third world countries, yes, drink only bottled water - and, lots of it.

Osteoporosis runs in my family. While I don't have it now, I have to take a calcium supplement to prevent my bones from losing calcium in the future. I've done some research on the subject of calcium and bones and caffeine (found in coffee, tea, colas and some energy drinks) can indeed leach calcium from your bones.

The only place I've seen this claimed is on a site that was trying to sell you a book called How The Big Soft Drink Companies Are Evil Because They Make Products People Like or words to that effect. Of course, they didn't bother naming any scientific studies that show this.

Its also used by car mechanics to get the corrision from the battery acid off the cables on car batteries. Thought this was an intresting fact.
Sad to say I still drink it though.
I think its ok in moderation, like maybe just a can a day.

Ive never heard of that.. im assuming shes refering to the caffeine in the coca cola. The things i hear about caffeine and in soda their are high amounts is its a dueretic it drains alot of water out of your system, caffeine will block the absportion of vitamin c it also isnt good on your kidneys and doesnt really do so well on your thirst and energy because it leads you to have more and more coca cola not really satisfying the need in my opinion. Maybe this is part of what your mom is trying to tell you.

If anything, caffeine has the effect or removing calcium.

This is reversible, esp. through supplementation (no need to overeat dairy at all)

Just cut back on caffeine, and you will retain moreminerals in general.
Cola has caffiene, thus the connection....
Dont be scared by 'dissolving chicken bones' etc-- our body has buffers and is very adapted to deal with things.
Consider vinegar and stomach acid -- ph2 --far worse than soda!!
And we produce this naturally everyday..... dont be freaked out.... ;)
