I always wake up too early and am not able to go back to sleep if I drink the night before. My average used to be 5 hours of sleep on those nights. Is this common?

Side note-last night was the first time I have drank alcohol in about 6 months, but I used to drink often.

Brother.

There is not enough information in your explanation to give you a direct answer. Being a retired connoisseur of all things alcoholic at one time, I think I have the expertise to give you a place to start in discovering the answer to your question.

Beverages containing alcohol cause the body to diurese (void, piss). This fluid is stored in your bladder until the bladder expands and stimulates nerves within its lining. The normal minimal is 30 ml per hour and the bladder can usually hold 250 without letting you know its time to go. When you consume a drink, more than 200 ml per hour can accumulate in the bladder in 30 minutes and have a delayed effect to keep working long after you stop drinking. Normal function of the urinary system 500 ml is uncomfortable and 700 or more can be painful. That's why beer makes us piss up a storm. So on those nights that you drink I imagine that you void before you go to bed and are awakened after 5 hours to void to keep from wetting the bed. Some times this sensation is so gentle that we don't realize the cause for waking. So my question is do you have to void when you wake up after drinking? Try emptying your bladder and going back to sleep when that happens.
The other thing that comes to mind is electrolyte depletion that accompanies called a 'hang over'. Your body may be sensitive to that feeling and be waking you to start replacing some of the fluid and electrolytes that you have lost. My second question: do you have a hangover after you wake? If so keep some Gatorade or sports drink around the house for those occasions. Orange juice and fresh bananas will cure that problem in no time.

Drinking will do that. When the alcohol wears off your body wakes up. It's normal. As for the nights that you don't drink and have this problem, it could be anything from depression to simply that's how much sleep your body requires.

I'm always able to get back to sleep. Last night I stayed up until nearly 3 and felt wide awake at 7:30 but I had no trouble getting back to sleep for 5 more hours.

30min-1hr of good exercise will probably allow you to sleep alot sounder. Just make sure there is about at least 3-4 hrs between your work out and when you lay down. Also no caffiene 5 hours before bed. no eating 3 hours before bed.

Quit drinking! It's a waste of money and harmful to your health and possibly other people if you become intoxicated!
