How can a person make a hole in a glass bottle. Like if you wanted to use the bottle for a lamp base, you would have to run an electric cord through it. How can that hole be made in glass?

HOW TO DRILL GLASS: Get a piece of steel wire and file to shape of drill. This must be tempered as follows: Heat the end of the drill on a flame until it is dull red, then place it in metallic mercury. This drill, tempered in this manner will bore through glass as easily as through soft metal. When using in glass, always use oil of turpentine with a little camphor added to lubricate the drill. As you drill, be careful not to drill clear through from one side as you will break the glass this way. Drill partly, or almost through, then start from the opposite side and finish the hole. Or, if you cannot do this, as when you are drilling bottles, etc.. fill this bottle with water or place the glass in water. CAUTION: When you make the drill, do not make the cutting edges so sharp or too acute. The drill will cut slowly but you will have better holes with less breakage.

Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself if the glass should shatter. Do not press too hard. Better to grind a hole in the glass with a grinding tool like Dremel than to try to cut through and have sharp chips flying everywhere. The easier you go, the less chance for cracks to develop.
I believe you can buy special drill bits for glass. Use a drill with variable speeds.
Please do not put hot metal into mercury, the vapors are highly poisonous. And if any should drop, it's nearly impossible to pick it all up so your shop will have mercury vapors in it all the time.
Rather than trying to hold the bottle in one hand and the drill in the other, it will be easier and safer to hold the bottle by wrapping it in a towel and holding this securely in a large vise. If the vise can be positioned in a drill press, then niether the bottle nor drill bit can slide and your hands will be safe.
The hardest part may be starting while the glass is smooth and slippery. Once the bit has made a small depression, it will stay in place better. Using a file by hand to make a small rough spot before using the drill will help.
Go as slowly and gently as possible when breaking through the backside of the glass.

Use a drill bit specifically designed for drilling glass...they look like the business end of a garden trowel, although flat. Use protective eyeware, light pressure on the bit, be patient. If the bottle has particular significance to you, such as the champagne bottle from an anniversary, take it to a glass shop and let them do it.

torch, warmth the bottle up until eventually its malleable and slowly make that hollow from a distance with a steel rod. use severe warning, any form of unprotected touch at that form of temp will reason severe burns. additionally, use shaded glasses to guard your eyes. thermite, i haven't tried it on glass bottles, tried it as quickly as on a tumbler table, the thermite hearth blazed uncontrolled and at last I had to certainly sell off for gas on it so it will snuff itself out. Thermite fires can't be extinguished with water, it is going to certainly convert it to gas. Thermite fires has its very own gas, warmth, and oxygen components the only actual thank you to place it out is to make it burn quicker. the different time the glass fabric exploded. if in case you wanna attempt it, i could propose some solid distance and not use too lots. No leaded glass. electric arc. plasma from electric arcs are as much as 50,000 F. you will choose a severe voltage low modern furnish and a few tungsten. the glass can't be thicker than a million/4". start up the arc and basically warmth the severe warmth soften the glass. this methodology is basically for those that understand approximately electricity, somebody without clue can get themselves and others killed.

Against the electrical code. All zip cords MUST be fed through a 1/8" threaded pipe to the socket with a bushing on the opposite end.

Go to a hardware store and ask for a drill bit that will drill through glass. They exist. I know because I have used them. And when you drill, drill slowly with light to moderate pressure.
