How do you care for orchids after the blossoms have fallen?

My parents were given a beautiful orchid plant this summer. The blooms lasted until a couple of weeks ago, then fell in pieces on the table. There is green near the base of the stem. What should they do to make sure the plant is healthy?

Keep them in a bright area but not in direct sun. Don't overwater them and only fertilize sparingly with an orchid fert like Shultz Orchid Food.
