It is important when communicating to confirm that one is understood. Many people say similar things like: "understood?", "does this make sense to you?", "How do you feel about that?", etc. The fact that they're seeking feedback is good, however they do it. All people do it, just might use different words. Is there an issue with with this particular phrase over all others?

I guess I didn't know this was a black thing...I say it, not a lot, but I do say this sometimes. Also most of my white friends say it from time to time. Maybe you just mean the frequency that black people use it? Im not sure. See my boyfriend is black, and he never says it, but I am white and say it probably a few times a week.

You know what I'm saying??

Not all black people say that , and if they do, they don't say it ALL the time. It's just like asking why do white people use "like" in between every word. No, im not racist...

They say it for the same reason white people say...like

Like you know what I mean?

People with poor speech habits say all kinds of things. No race is exempt... poor speech is poor speech.

Education plays a big role, those poor speech patterns almost totally disapear in every race... Just add education.

I DON'T KNOW, but it really irritates me. Not one, not one, hairbrained sentence can be said without "You know what I'm saying." Talk like an educated American, or don't talk at all.
