I know that Pernell Roberts left the show, and what some of his reasons were. But how did they work him out of the series? His fate seems to have been left uncertain, leaving it open for him to return, but he never did.

Dan Blocker later had a heart-attack and died. How was he worked out? Was he supposed to have died in the series?

Adam Cartwright left to join some type of merchant marine type boat (i forget what they actually called it).

Hoss actually was written off as having died, in the episode where Joe gets married.

In the mid 90's one of the big 3 networks had made for TV movie called "return to the ponderosa" or some such thing. It starred Michael Landons 2 kids, and Dan Blocker's son,Ithink it was about the children of the 3 Cartwright sons returning to the ranch to keep it away from a Mining company.

I know that they had Adam's son come back after being away and I think they gave an explanation as to where Adam had been, Pernell was the last survivor of the 4 leads when the movie was made, but to my knowledge was not in it.

If you can find the movie it can tell you

Yes, Adam went to China on a merchant ship!

I don't remember what happened to Hoss, sorry.

After Adam the Cartwrights befriended "Candy", who was like another son, and when "Candy" left they adopted a teenage boy, Jaime, played by Mitch Vogel!

Yes, Adam left to sail. I was not watching when Hoss died. I didn't care for the show much when Mitch Vogler joined the show.
