You'll need to first find out what languages your server supports. (it's most likely to be Perl, PHP and Python, maybe also Ruby or ASP insead). Then, look to see if there's a CMS that already does what you want (there's hundreds around, so I can't just check for you).

What you may be able to do is add the friend functionality to an existing CMS, using an existing standard such as XFN. It should be fairly easy to write something that tracks XFN, and it has the added advantage that off-site users who also add XFN markup can also be added to the friends list.

Ok, there are all kinds of scripts out there to do this. Look on e-bay for some. You could have a programmer design one from scratch and it would be unique or you can take an open script and have it tweaked some.

But enough of this stuff...

Lets talk business, what is in this for you...just to make friends? doubtful..your looking to make some cash off this thing correct?
Well, you better have deep pockets and a good marketing strategy to compete with MySpace. That being said you can find a niche in the market and place a strangle hold on it.

Making the site is the easy part....getting people to use and refer your site is the task.

Well...do you know anything about making webpages?

I suggest buying "Head First Html with CSS and XHTML". WE use it in my web design class. It's probably one of the best text books I've ever had, because of the different approaches they take.

If you're serious about this, you have to make a professional website.

Get good at server-side scripting, get good at databases, get good at web design. How you do that is up to you.
