i've noticed people talking about race in movies.... such as memoirs of a geisha, i was disappointed that hollywood wasn't accurate in it's portrayal but i understand why they cast the way that they did...they wanted mainstream actors in the lead roles, they wanted big name actors, it would have really cast an uproar if they would have put j-lo as suyuri hell i would never have seen the damn thing... with all the "movie stars" that we do have why is it that the talented people such as kathy bates, adrian brody, and the like get passed over for weak actors such as j-lo, beyonce and the other no talents.... hollywood only cares about looks...that;s why i am boycotting the movie theatre and downloading movies the day they come out

Less talented don't have to be reimbursed as highly for their works. As for Jlos and Beyonces making it in show business, they are making money for other people who bank off their present marketability. They're just puppets on strings really doing what they're told for people who have vested interests.....

The casting of actors for Hollywood films is controlled by casting directors for the established film companies , but I think that marketability and eye for profit also drives the selection.
I thought that Memories of a Geisha was done by an independent company and therefore there were no casting directors, no actor agents wooing the producers, etc. But your question is making me doubt my original assumption.
J Lo and Beyonce may have not enough talent in your eyes but their movies will make money because their fans will watch them.
It all boilsdown to this- will the producers make money or not, not looks of the actors. If you like quality films, watch movie festivals There are some great films there that never make it to the movie houses.
Many of us like DVDs of these films too, and wait until they are out.

that is because hollywood just picks random people and find something they are half way decient at and go from there. and that is because they are so stuck on making money that they dont look for hte REALLY REALLY good people, they just take what they can get and make them sound good.
and the reason for JLo and Beyonce, yes they are both beautiful, and very sexy, AND they can sing...so when they go into acting thye hope that their bodies and faces and reputations will make people go buy the movie and watch it at theatres so they can get more money...
truthfully, if i were ever a good enough singer to go to hollywood, i would stick with singing, cuz i know that years from now there are going to be even more little girls who would want my cds or watch my concert videos...remember that is if i ever make it to hollywood. which i really doubt
but that is my point on it.

Not just Hollywood, in everyday life it's the same. I'm sure you've met people at work and wondered how in the world did that person get hired. What were they thinking when they hired him/her.
