First Response says you can test up to 4 days before your expected period. It tests for an Hcg level of 25mIU/mL in the Urine. The lower the mIU/mL the more sensitive the test is. Many pregnancy test are 25mIU/mL, 40mIU/mL, 50mIU/mL 100mIU/mL.
It will not be 99.9% accurate 4 days before your period. This percentage is IF the levels of Hcg < pregnancy hormones> are at the levels it is looking for. It is only about 69.9% accurate at 4 days before your period.
Some females do not even reach 25mIU/mL until a week or two AFTER their expected period.
I just found this all out. I missed my period on Sept 5th and I am NEVER late. All my pregnancy test were negative even the ones that stated you could test as early as 4 days. My levels of Hcg were just too low to detect even by first response.
Below is a link to different pregnancy test and their hcg level comparison.
If you want to TRY and test before your period use one that is 20mIU/mL to no more than 25mIU/mL. The best time though to test is always after your period. The levels of Hcg doubles every three days after your expected period.
I have also included a link to show the levels of Hcg each week of pregnancy. Starting from the week of your last menstrual period. As you will see, some pregnancies will not reach 25mIU/mL till week 5 which is a week after your expected period.
Good luck!
Hope this information helps like it helped me!

I found out 11 days into it, but not everyone can. I used the Answer brand home test and got two very distinct pink lines, several times because I didnt' believe the first one! Good luck to you.

There is a new one that lets you take it 5 days before your period is due (It's called "First Response", I think). All the other OTC tests are not accurate until your period is due.
Blood tests are accurate 5 days after you had unprotected sex.

my ob says wait until the day you were supposed to get ur period. alot of tests have evaporation lines which can give you a false positive. also supposedly clearblue easy is the most sensitive brand and will give the most accurate results
