whales are mammals, which means, by definition, that babies are breast fed. They learn from the pod, and their mothers and siblings, which food to eat and how to get it/eat it.
most whales do not "kill prey". In fact, most whales eat very small sea creatures from plankton, to krill to small fish. "killer whales" or orca, are not whales but a type of dolphin, and they are the wolves of the sea.

their milk is about the richest of any mammal - around 70% fat as I remember - so the babies grow fast - they need to build a lot of blubber in a little time. Then they start eating what the parents eat - fish, plankton, depending on the species.

They have milk for them, and when they're old enough to wean, they teach them to eat little fishes. :) The animal planet channel had a show on them a couple of months ago that was extremely interesting. :)
