I have tried every combination of cable to imputs and outputs with no success. I must be doing something wrong?

Run them in series: DVR->VCR->TV.

This means you should be able to view your DVR through your VCR.

Presumably you already have your VCR hooked up directly to your TV? If so, it should be simple.

Connect your DVR output (it could be coaxial, it could be composite) and connect to the corresponding input of your VCR.

If, in so doing, you can watch your DVR though your VCR on your TV then you are ready to record.

There is really very little that could make this not work.

I assume your cable/dvr box is currently connected directly to the tv. Remove the cable from the back of your tv, and hook it up to the INPUT of your vcr. Then, you will need another coaxial cable from the OUTPUT of your vcr, to your tv. Now you should be fine, you just have to play each saved show, while you click record. It's going to be a tedious process.
