My partner separated from his ex a few years ago and we are looking to organise our wedding for next year as early as possible but we don't know how long we have to wait after the divorce is finalised as they have not long filed.

It is illegal to remarry before the divorce becomes final Divorce will not become final until the expiration of one month after the divorce was granted.
so give or take it has to be at least one month to the day before you can remarry

Are you absolutely sure that one must actually go to Australia and remarry after being divorced?
When I was divorced, I naturally assumed it was my fault (simply because I was the man). But no one mentioned to me that I'd be required to move to Australia and marry someone else. It's been several years since my divorce---so if this is true, I'm worried that there may be serious consequences by now.
If I do comply with the law and move down there, say, within the next month, and I manage to find someone suitable right away, would you be interested in having a double ceremony so we could split the costs of the minister and hall? That'd be great, since moving all the way down there is going to cost me a bundle. Thanks for considering this.

In most states, you are declared single 6 months from the time you file. The court sends you the final papers, that both he, and his ex have already signed. On it it will state the date upon which you are regarded again as a single person. You can marry the next day.

Edward is correct, it is exactly one calendar month after the Divorce Decree is granted and dated.
