I've already answered this question, but here goes again...

It has got to be Personal Jesus! I've heard him say that many interpret Personal Jesus as a religious song and that it in fact has nothing to do with religion.

When I heard it the first time. I thought it had something to do with the Catholic Church and their decision to let people, about to die, confess their sins over the telephone. Hence "pick up your receiver, I'll make you a believer". I've heard many other interpretations to the song.

But I eventually listened to the Violator album as a whole and the whole album is very neatly put together. From the first to the last song, the album tells a story. Like a book with chapters. You have to listen to the album as a whole to really know what they are talking about.

The song itself was inspired by the book "Elvis and Me" by Priscilla Presley. According to songwriter Martin Gore, "It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?"

The Violator album is a great album because it tells the story of one man fighting his demons wether it be drugs or love. And it uses drugs as a metaphor to express how addictive some relationships are. And that brings me to the answer you are really looking for...what is the interpretation of all or most Depeche Mode songs? Their songs are really all about "relationships".

I have been a devotee for more than 15 years and have over 60 CDs and DVDs from this band.
