Whatever you try, try it in an inconspicuous spot first. Some things will remove the black marks but they will also remove the finish. Here are some household things you might try - Mr. Clean type bleach sponge, rubbing alcohol, toothpaste, nail polish remover, Fantastik, 409, Brillo pads, mineral spirits (paint thinner), dishwasher detergent. Saddle soap will definitely work and won't hurt the leather. Instead of following the instructions fro cleaning bridles etc though, just put it on generously with a dry cloth and the marks will just rub away.

Try using a pencil eraser, or (strangely) a piece of white bread. This has worked for me before and doesn't mark the shoe. good luck!
