In 1951 the only 350cc bike produced in India was the Royal Enfield 350.
That too had most of its parts imported, because the company was originally from UK.
At that time, a plant in chennai bought some rights to the firm and started production locally.
The famous logo: "Built Like A Gun - Goes Like A Bullet" was first used for this bike only.
Amazingly, for around 50 years this bike was produced with very little changes.
It was only a few years ago that a new AVL (aluminium) engine was offered.
These and many more details are very well showcased in the Royal Enfield Chennai showroom , which is more or less of a pseudo museum for the company's history.

The Matchless that I remember was a strong powerfull bike that was popular at the dirt tracks here in the U.S. They were a bike that you didn't take too lightly....They would kick butt. A machine to fear.not only on the dirt tracks but at Hill climbs too.
