Jack has provided an interesting approach. While the answer indicates the power of conviction in one's self and ideals, it does not indicate why they were assassinated.
Assassination, is a threat to the society, that they should not follow the person or his ideals. I do not consider that it symbolises the differences. These acts are by an unknown individual, who is jealous of the popularity, and wants to occupy the position of popularity, by removing the person from the scene.
It is a different matter that such assassination has always strengthened the movement for which the victim laid his life.

Great people take a stand in life. Because of that, two things happen.
1. They rise head and shoulders above others around them.
2. Therefore, they make better targets.
If you take a stand you are guaranteed to make many friends and many enemies. The men you mentioned took stands on issues that generate much heat and passion. Therefore, they took on the serious risk of knowing they would outrage those who disagreed with them. That is the nature of greatness. To risk your life to stand for something larger than yourself.
If you want to have only friends in life, never take a stand, Because you'll never tick anyone off. But that is to live a worthless life. The truly great know this. And because they take stands on passionate interests, they provoke passionate responses. Okay?

These great people follow the Path of Truth which is never easy to follow . As someone said :
" Following the Path of Truth is like walking on Fire . "
And in doing so , these people ruffle the feathers of many doing wrong deeds and even expose many such people who cannot take them on publicly . So these Bad elements conspire to assassinate them .
Political motives too play their role in such assassinations . But no Ideological difference can justify such acts . It is basically the insecurity of such forces which make them assassinate Great People .

when one great person is born 100 persons with low thinking are born simultaeneously and these 100 people cannot find one way to suppress the 1 great person. and so they take the simplet and the illegal way
