Here in New Mexico there is a ghost story that's really quite popular. It's called the La Llorona. Here it is.
Long years ago in a humble little village there lived a fine looking girl named Maria. Some say she was the most beautiful girl in the world! And because she was so beautiful, Maria thought she was better than everyone else.
As Maria grew older, her beauty increased And her pride in her beauty grew too When she was a young woman, she would not even look at the young men from her village. They weren't good enough for her! "When I marry," Maria would say, "I will marry the most handsome man in the world."
And then one day, into Maria's village rode a man who seemed to be just the one she had been talking about. He was a dashing young ranchero, the son of a wealthy rancher from the southern plains. He could ride like a Comanche! In fact, if he owned a horse, and it grew tame, he would give it away and go rope a wild horse from the plains. He thought it wasn't manly to ride a horse if it wasn't half wild.
He was handsome! And he could play the guitar and sing beautifully. Maria made up her mind-that was, the man for her! She knew just the tricks to win his attention.
If the ranchero spoke when they met on the pathway, she would turn her head away. When he came to her house in the evening to play his guitar and serenade her, she wouldn't even come to the window. She refused all his costly gifts. The young man fell for her tricks. "That haughty girl, Maria, Maria! " he said to himself. "I know I can win her heart. I swear I'll marry that girl."
And so everything turned out as Maria planned. Before long, she and the ranchero became engaged and soon they were married. At first, things were fine. They had two children and they seemed to be a happy family together. But after a few years, the ranchero went back to the wild life of the prairies. He would leave town and be gone for months at a time. And when he returned home, it was only to visit his children. He seemed to care nothing for the beautiful Maria. He even talked of setting Maria aside and marrying a woman of his own wealthy class.
As proud as Maria was, of course she became very angry with the ranchero. She also began to feel anger toward her children, because he paid attention to them, but just ignored her.
One evening, as Maria was strolling with her two children on the shady pathway near the river, the ranchero came by in a carriage. An elegant lady sat on the seat beside him. He stopped and spoke to his children, but he didn't even look at Maria. He whipped the horses on up the street.
When she saw that, a terrible rage filled Maria, and it all turned against her children. And although it is sad to tell, the story says that in her anger Maria seized her two children and threw them into the river! But as they disappeared down the stream, she realized what she had done! She ran down the bank of the river, reaching out her arms to them. But they were long gone.
The next morning, a traveler brought word to the villagers that a beautiful woman lay dead on the bank of the river. That is where they found Maria, and they laid her to rest where she had fallen.
But the first night Maria was in the grave, the villagers heard the sound of crying down by the river. It was not the wind, it was La Llorona crying. "Where are my children?" And they saw a woman walking up and down the bank of the river, dressed in a long white robe, the way they had dressed Maria for burial. On many a dark night they saw her walk the river bank and cry for her children. And so they no longer spoke of her as Maria. They called her La Llorona, the weeping woman. And by that name she is known to this day. Children are warned not to go out in the dark, for, La Llorona might snatch them and never return them.

Ok here goes, I live way down south when I was a little girl there was a place called kings point, in kingspoint was also a bridge with a small river under it back in the 1940s, there also was a train that ran near the bridge about a mile or so away from the bridge. there was a woman that had dark hair and dark eyes that was dressed in her wedding gown on her way to the church. she crossed over the bridge and over the railroad tracks and there was no sign or signal of a train coming she was walking, back then down south everybody road the bus. as she rushed over the tracks the train killed her instantly, and they say that at night you can hear her heels clicking walking across the bridge, and that if she encounters you and speaks to you she will be in her gown. and ask which way is the bus station, and she will be in her wedding gown. and when you answer her she will say thank you and walk away and turn back and look at you and say for the wages of sin is death. and disappear. this is suppose to happen at midnight. I know that once I crossed the bridge at midnight and my car quit on me. it was a mechanical problem though. fortunately I had a cousin that lived in walking distance of the bridge. the place is dark and spooky. no lights on that road. just incase this is not hocus pocus. I never travel that darn road. I have not been back. the story is still popular today some say they have seen her I heard this in the late 70s. good luck on your other stories.

there was a civil war battle in Lexington, Missouri that lasted three days. On the battlefield to this day can be seen soldiers walking around and some sounds of voices can be heard in the woods surrounding the field. The house just to the edge of the battlefield was used as a field hospital and there have been reports of sightings of a woman carrying a lantern and of wounded and dying soldiers in the house and surrounding area. They do a renactment of the battle once in awhile and also one at the Anderson House of a field hospital from the civil war times. The Anderson House changed hands three times during the battle and bears the scars of bullet holes and cannon shot. It is now a museum with guided tours. The house is the only thing that remains standing, the barns, slave quarters, summer kitchen and other buildings are gone.
All throughout Lexington is huge old houses from civil war times and each one has their "ghost". You can still find houses around here with all the outside buildings intact. (slave quarters, kitchens, barns, etc)
The cemetary here, Machpelah, is also been rumoured to have it's ghosts. They also do a renactment of the cemetary battle that actuall took place among the head stones. During the fall they do a guided tour through the cemetary in the evening and people dressed as the inhabitants of the cemetary "appear" and tell you their story.
Lexington, Missouri was once the biggest town in this area in it's heyday. The town of Kansas (which became Kansas City) did not exist yet and Lexington had a huge riverboat business.
The was a riverboat explosion just off the banks and all of the passengers that were killed are buried in a mass grave in the cemetary. There is a memorial to the Saluda and all it's dead downtown as well as the mass grave headstone. It's been rumoured that that grave site is active with ghosts also.
Though I have not seen any of the above ghosts, I know persons who have. I have my own story about ghosts in this house and the previous house... have to ask me later on that.

Well here in Atlanta Ga, where I live. There's a thing where when it's a full moon for the first time at night during the fall season. The owls come out and perch the trees, telephone poles, and anything up high. Not alot of them, I'd say about three or four maybe. But the following morning they'd still be out. Owls in the day time is said to be a sigh of death. But nobody dies. Actually when that happens everything seems so peaceful and calm for a few days. true story briefly put

We have a similar story about a railroad bridge in Avon, Indiana. Supposedly, once a woman was carrying her baby to the doctor. She got about halfway across the bridge when a train came upon her, knocking her and the baby into the creek below. They found the mother, but not the baby. The wind wails through the arches in the bridge, but some say it is really the baby crying for its mother.

The high school here was an abbey up until the 1940's, when there were enough families and few enough nuns for it to become a school instead. It's said that a nun hung herself there, and that she still haunts the school. General consensus was that she killed herself in the room that now houses the swimming pool, as many people claim to have heard a woman crying there.

This is actually a common story throughout the Southwest, and everyone is apparently told it happened in their own town...
The story is that a woman for some reason killed her own children and now goes around kidnapping children to replace her own and/or kidnapping naughty children for unexplainable reasons. She's called La Llorona. According to my grandparents:
She was a crazy woman who killed her children by beating them against a wall. She now has long white hair and long fingernails, like 2 feet long, and my grandpa knows her and can send her after his grandkids at will if they are bad, and my great-grandpa apparently saw her when his car broke down once in the middle of the night.
