I am well aware that it is expensive. but exactly what will an average meal at an average restaurant be?

Yes in Tokyo it is expensive but if you go to the smaller cities and use the supermarkets its as cheap as any western country (ok maybe not for fruit). Shop daily like the locals and there is always a bargin.

Bloody expensive - US$10 for a bowl of noodles in a 'cheap' restaurant.

Japan is bloody expensive. Me as half-japanese prefer hanging round in Thailand where everything is afordable :P
Both the chicks are in both country as hot.

beef is about aus $100 kilo
1 small snapper(fish) about1kg fresh aus$50
exotic fruit-mango/pawpaw aus$10 each
other basic foods/staples about twice our normal food bill in australia

If you go to "Gusto" or "Denny's" or "Yoshino-ya", you can get pretty full around $5.00
