I think its mostly a biological brain function sort of thing. I 'm in the latter category .In school I was basically a Calvin as in Calvin and Hobbes, off in dream land . Over a long period of time I have found a place in life...well sort of.I have a dog that has some sort of canine obsessive compulsive disorder. He's all attention for small objects and really goes nuts for a laser light so much so that he can think of nothing else ,even when the light is gone he continues to look for it.I knew another dog that was so obsessed with looking for the light that he would stare and chase sunlight reflecting off of any shinny object(all day ,I really mean all day) and on a cloudy day he would have a completely lost look. Why all this rambling about dogs with OCD ?.I think a minor form of this in the correct area of the brain may give people more direction life than others.Of course the environmental nurture factor surely plays a part .I use an animal example because I think its easier to accept that dogs have certain charateristics that are genetic .People have these too.

Some people do not have the same supportive circles and social charms no matter what similar behaviors or work qualities they have. So others will have an easier time no matter what they do, and others will always be struggling with basic, below level of ability things just to get to a higher level.
