My 9 year old son has £13 birthday money left to spend. He wants to buy himself something today, but doesn't really know what he wants.

His dad's getting a little impatient because he wants us to get on with it!!

Any suggestions?

Honestly, one shouldn't throw parties where the guests have to pay for entry, even a parent when the children cannot be dropped off. And no one should expect a gift (though I understand you wanting to bring one). So, yes, it actually is a lot to expect considering the etiquette, the economic times, and the fact that it's a four-year-old who is unlikely to even remember the party the following week. Feel free to tell your friend it's not in your budget to attend "pay as you go" events.

Save his money there is no hurry dont let him waste his money wait till there is something he really wants, plus it will soon be christmas so all the goodies are coming out in the shops.

Tell his Dad to mind his own business. It's your son's money and he can spend it when he wants to on what he wants to.

If you rush him he will become irresponsible with money; always wanting to spend it quickly. Next he'll want to spend money he doesn't have; credit cards.
