Ok, y'see, you need to look at the actual situation - someone being very ill/terminal illness and in chronic pain first - can someone else can pontificate and refuse this person the right to end their life in a humane way? Leave that rhetorical question up there, its inviting your oponent to say "YES! we want to prolong Jane Doe's life when she in excruciating pain"

Its important to tease out the pro-life position to its logical conclusion. If you are anti euthanasia what practical steps will you take to preserve it. 24hr watch? Cancer patients taken into protactive custody? What practically are the anti-euthanasia people proposing? I always have a difficulty with the term pro-life. They obsess about those near death and the unborn but show scant reagrd for those LIVING in abject poverty (or in Iraq/Afghanistan etc).

That last comment was just an aside but i think you should speak about the fundamental human right that people have - control of their own body and life. The idea that someone should have the moral authority to refuse someone's desire to die is an infringement of the right of the individual. Individual rights aren't absolute of course, we don't respect the right of a white supremacist to string up a black man, but in this instance the patients desire affects themselves.

Your opponents will counter that affects the family and friends of the patient, yet what loved one would selfishly prolong someone's pain to keep them around.

Some of the arguments against:
there will be whole-scale govt sponsored euthanasia as a way of reducing health costs for the elderly. ---- counter that with the decision of the individual being crucial

The religious argument - god gives us life, god decides when to take it away-------- counter this with: the fact that there is no consensus on this means that it must be up to the individual to make this decision for themselves. If I'm an athiest and i'm refused the right to die because of the governor's faith it's a bit weird.

And Crucially, This has been going on since god knows when - outlawing it won't supress it - what we need is tolerant compasisionate provision for those who need it.

never wrote so much before....
obviously close to my heart ;-)

Euthanasia or mercy killling is logical answer for people who are terminally ill with illnesses like cancer or Aids etc. in advanced stage and from medical point there is no possibility of recovery or people who are brain dead. It is not only agony for them but also for their dear ones. Euthanasia helps them to be relieved from their pain and relief to the dear ones, who has to watch them die slowly in a vegetable stage, with no physical or visible life signs
It reduces financial burden on the victims family and society. The limited medical facilities and services in especially poor countries can be used for more on treatable cases.
