would ps3 graphics still look totally next-gen and pretty WITHOUT A HDTV?

There are two components to the answer.

1. It will not look as good as on an HDTV, because you're working with a lower resolution (1080p is more than twice as many pixels as 480i SDTV).
2. It will look better than a PS2 because it has more power. That means more polygons, more particles, more effects, better anti-aliasing, etc. Characters will look more realistic and there should be fewer jaggies (due to FSAA).

So in short, it will look "next gen" (whatever that means. Sweat on players?) and better than the PS2. However it will look even better on an HDTV.

quite the PS3 does even with the indisputable fact that it has no video games yet that help the full potential of the equipment, and Xbox 360 has an exceedingly good snap shots card yet no best like the PS3. if you're making plans on procuring get the Xbox 360 for Halo 3. Thats what's inaccurate with the PS3 no longer some thing is unique to the equipment. It will look better that your PS2, but you need to use an HDTV or computer monitor to get the full next-gen graphics.

Basically regular TVs can't show the fine detail that PS3 can display (ie high resolution). So you miss out on sharper graphics.

ps3 is a device that is HD - ready and of course it will look good on n HDTV as they r better than most of the normal tv's and ps3 can also run well if u have the old analog tv's.
