I think the most critical measure of success is whether or not you think you're successful. If you've achieved what you consider to be success then you're successful.

Most people would say money or material possessions, it's true to some extent and it's easier to measure it with something so obvious and tangible but I would not completely agree because there are more things in life than these.
I think, like Plato did, success is doing the best in whatever field you are in. Like if you're into politics, you'd be the president. If you're into law, you'd be the best judge and so on and so forth. If you're a street-sweeper than you'll be the best street-sweeper this world has ever seen. Award giving bodies also define success somehow.
Personally, if you're happy and you're well-rounded and balanced with life then that is success at it's peak. It may not have to be *their* version of success, but if you're contented then so be it.

My personal yard stick....
I measure my own success by how happy I am and my ability to take care of myself physically and emotionally.
I have what I need in life, a good job, a home, I live comfortably and within my means and have plans for my retirement.
I associate success with happiness and well being.
Inner peace and happiness....
