All are essential to a well-run business.

Directors -- usually have significant (to them) shareholdings. Usually highly motivated to run the business profitably. Can be more interested in their own aggrandisement than in shareholders' wealth.

Managers -- can be more motivated by personal career goals than by profits. Cos (ie, directors) can align these two with profit-related incentives.

Employees -- in smaller businesses, employees will naturally think of the company as "us" if there is respect and teamwork from the leadership. In giant corps, the company is inevitably "them". People working for a huge business will get pay, perks, and companionship, and some may et a sense of achievement and fulfilment from work, but it is difficult to relate these personally-pereived benefits to company success.
