If you can get rid of the carpets that would help the most, however having a professional carpet cleaner come in is second best. Clean with Vinegar to elminate any pet odors. This will also help elminate the dander that causes allergens. Open windows if you can let the place air out. Don't forget to clean walls if they weren't freshly painted and window sills-thats were cats typically hang out. Hope this helps!

The allergens are microscopic particles of saliva on the hairs and skin, also pieces of skin (dander.) There may be dust mites feeding on the skin and you may have an allergy to their droppings (digested cat skin.)
Replace all carpets and padding. Replace curtains, upholstery on sofa or bed, anything than can collect dust.
I've heard that the tannic acids in tea bond to proteins well so spraying a room with a tea solution sort of glues the proteins down so they don't float around. Be sure the items you spray won't be stained by the tea.
Paint walls and windowsills.
When the new carpet and upholstery arrive, dust them with powdered laundry borax to prevent more dust mites from living in them. It won't hurt the carpet and is almost non-toxic - pets and little kids can still crawl on the carpets, but it keeps the insect population down. It really works.

I heard on one of those TV lifestyle shows, that cleaning products with enzymes in them (like Bio Zet, for example) are very good at cleaning animal smells away - they are so good that another animal can not smell the previous animals' scents. This may also be true in stopping the trigger for your allergy? Might be a cheaper solution than fumigating or professional cleaning. Good luck!

Deep, DEEP clean! That means get rid of anything that could be harboring the allergens (like curtains, anything upholstered, etc). Good luck!

Get a Ionic Breeze or some other air filter and also clean the place really well, wipe down every nook and cranny.

If you can afford to get two air filters to place in the rooms that you are in the most that should help.

Good Luck!
