I am sure it chould happen. They use NiCad batteries in them and if the basttery fails yes I guess it could happen. Just like the issue with the Dell/Sony IBM batteries

Mobile phone, you know has an inbuilt battery to supply power to the phone. The very name cell phone implies that.
A mobile phone has no fuel of its own to explode. Then how it explodes?
The mobile when in use draws current from the battery unit.
If the battery is week, it may get heated up as the current drawal is more than its capacity during use.
The cell is made up of certain rechargeable chemicals which are very sensitive to heat.
You might have read the caution note on the cell that you dont keep the cell near a heat source. It may explode.
The cell may also get heated up if any of the IC is short circuited and drawing more current.
Some inferior quality may not withstand to supply current while you talk as well as charge the cell.
In all the cases it is the heat that is resposible for explosion which is generated during use that triggers the chemical component of the cell to explode.

see the article below. It is related to battery problem:
The explosion of five mobile phones in Brazil over the last two months is causing concern in the Samba-loving South American country. The incidents, all involving Motorola phones, are being linked to dodgy batteries. Both Motorola and local telecoms regulators have tasked investigators with confirming the cause of the problems.
The latest incident in Formosa, Goias state left a 34 year-old woman in need of surgery on her thighs and arms after a phone exploded in her lap while she was driving. Other accidents have been recorded in Rio and in three in towns within Sao Paulo state.
Motorola is pointing towards the use of low-quality batteries, suppled by third parties, as the probable cause of the explosions. "We are having a strong campaign to alert users not to buy accessories which are not original. It's very common for people to do this in markets or non-authorized stores," Motorola spokeswoman Samantha Simon told Reuters.

I remember there were some problems with batteries to laptops, phones, etc. They become overheated and then explode. However as I know they withdraw them from market and from buyers. Maybe you should check for technical support at seller or at your phone battery producer web site. Possibly the greatest risk of explosion is while recharging it. If you suspect you have that kind of battery be sure you will not burn something or get scald.

My only guess would be like any other electronic devise the cell phn needs to breath...in other words who evers cellphn exploded, they had it wrapped or packed too tightly or put the wrong kind of battery in the phn. Thats why you should treat your phn with just as much care as anything else and not mix and match sim, batteries or pack it too tightly.

It is not the cell phone that explodes, but the battery. Ask Dell about their exploding computers, which they recalled.

I heard of it. From what I heard its due to faulty battery. Same as what happens to laptops. Ofcourse not necessarily the same battery manufacturer
