It does depend on what you're using. I have found that the best out there so far is Victoria Secret 'Bare Bronze' tanning lotion. I have bought for myself as well as my sister who does not tan at all! I've always been a skeptic about tanning lotions/sprays..but once having this I won't use anything else. I started out with the light to medium lotion (which is actually a regular lotion that is white..and you use it everyday just for moisturization). The color comes gradual and sets to the tone of your skin to prevent that orange look. Then I moved onto the medium to dark lotion afterwards.
Once you stop using the product the tan graudually fades...however if you want to keep the gorgeous color you can use the body scrub which keeps the color of the lotion. They also sell a spray and you MUST rub it in...otherwise you will see spotting!! This product (depending upon use) does not make you overly tan..and gets you the color you want. Make sure that you do wash your hands once you've used the spray and even the lotion because your palms do not have pores that the lotion mixes it'self into.

Stay as far away from self-tanners as possible. I've tried them all, from L'Oreal to Jergans, Neutrogena to who knows what else. I've tried foams, gels, lotions, and sprays and none of them worked. I gave in and started going to a tanning bed. If you only want to be tan for the dance, don't worry about it. Going tanning a couple times isn't a big deal, as long as you don't go your whole life, a billion hours a day, every day of the week. The other option you have is going to a tanning salon for a spray on tan. Go closer to April when the dance is coming up. It'll be a lot more even and won't look orange/streaky.

I've been using this too. The first application gives you just a nice tint. Apply daily after shower if you want to go darker. When you've got the desired colour just top up every other day.

Depends which one you use, my hubby got the Johnsons one and he looked ermm like the tango man for a couple of days lol, thats one I wouldn't recommend.

I think the idea with them is to get a sun kissed look, so choose one that suits your skin type.

I will depend on your skin type and the product your using. Why not stick to pale and interesting - it's a lot better for you!

it depends on how dark skinned you are to begin with.
if you want a tan that bad why not just go and have a spray tan??
