I agree with you and so do a lot of other people. He's not putting out any albums. I think that has a lot to do with it.

In short, it is the "tall poppy syndrome". Kate Moss was recently the victim of it, Pete Doherty has been attached with it, Axl Rose from Guns and Roses suffers from it, but sometimes it is the persons own fault and other times it isn't.
George's unfortunate downfall was that there has been some bad press surrounding his activities in public. In cases like this, depending on what it is they get caught doing, it will drive your public away. If you get stung for child-related offences, (like Michael Jackson or Gary Glitter) you can almost guarantee your record sales will plummet. In George's case, he has been painted as a bit of a "pervert" by the tabloid press and, like Michael J, the public gets turned off by that and they run the other way. People are very quick to judge other people, especially celebrities in the public eye. When bad press turns up like that, the public will almost crucify the celebrity.
The old adage used to be "any publicity is good publicity", but recently that has been proven not to be the case.
If I may put forward a slice of personal philosophy (that's an Alice Cooper quote for the trainspotters), don't get involved with tabloid rubbish - it's designed to slander and slur people. If you like the music, they enjoy it and don't let anything taint your perception of it. I reckon it's what in the grooves/on the CD that counts, not what the artist does in his spare time.
Hope this helps...

Most probably due to his lewd acts in a public bathroom.
"Questions of his sexual orientation persisted in public, until the 7th April 1998, with his arrest for "engaging in a lewd act" in a public toilet in a park in Beverly Hills, USA. He was arrested by an undercover policeman named Marcelo Rodriguez.
George Michael: "Well, I was followed into the restroom, and then, this cop – well, I didn't know he was a cop at the time obviously – he started playing this game. I think it's called ‘I'll show you mine, you show me yours, and then when you show me yours, I'm gonna nick you!'" [1]
After pleading "no contest" to the charge, Michael was fined $810 and sentenced to 80 hours of community service. Soon afterwards, Michael made a video for his single "Outside" which was clearly based on the public toilet incident and which featured men dressed up as policemen kissing. Rodriguez, the police officer, claimed that this video "mocked" him, and also that Michael had slandered him in interviews, and in 1999 brought a ten million dollar court case in California against the singer. The court dismissed the case on the grounds related to the officer's status as a public official, but an appeals court reinstated the case on 3rd December 2002.
After that incident he became open about his homosexuality. He also became public about his relationship with Kenny Goss; a former cheerleader coach [2] and later Adidas sports clothing executive, originally from Dallas, Texas; [3] his partner since that time. Goss and Michael opened the Goss Gallery in 2005 in Dallas, which shows contemporary works of art such as those collected by the couple. The couple have homes in London, Hollywood and Dallas [4]. In late November 2005 it was reported [5] that Michael and Goss would, in the following year, register their relationship as a Civil Partnership in the UK - but various tabloid recorded public spats and Michaels various drugs incidents in 2006 may delay that, as Michael has commented that he wants all the publicity to die down first [6].
In July 2006 Michael was photographed by UK tabloid newspaper News of the World reporters, emerging from the bushes on Hampstead Heath, apparently following a sexual tryst with Norman Kirtland, who they called a "pot-bellied, 58-year-old, jobless van driver" [7]. Michael then hit back at the newspaper, by announcing that he was suing the photographers for harassment and possibly libel, and suing Kirtland himself. However, in a later interview on BBC News 24, he stated that he would not sue the newspaper, and said that cruising was defacto private because it was taking place at 2am [8]. In a later interview with the Daily Mirror, he claimed that he had been cruising regularly for gay sex since his early teens, and that partner Kenny Goss had no problem with him having casual sex with other people [9]. In a telephone interview with Richard and Judy, he said: "We (Kenney Goss and Michael) had a lovely tenth anniversary party. My present to him was a million quid so I think I should get away with so-called fooling around with 'Bernard Manning'. I've no idea who that guy was but thank-you very much, whoever he was." [10].
