I am getting at whether primitive man could see a sphere in the sky.

The fact that the moon has phases (quarter moon, half moon, etc) can't happen with a flat disc although i'm not sure it 'proves' the moon is a sphere it's the simplest soulution and it requires no more physics than a round rock and a light source so yes a really clever primitive man could have figured it out assuming he'd already figured out that the earth orbits the sun and the moon orbits the earth.
