you can get a cocktail dress from...monsoon, oasis, new look, dorothy perkins, moda, mon cheri, Matthew Williamson, debenhams, warehouse, river island, miss selfridge, TK maxx, outfit, topshop, evans, wallis...
and good places for shoes include...reval, qube, morgan, faith and most of the above sell shoes as well.

How formal is it? Does the invite say cocktail, black tie or white tie? What you wear depends on the level of formality.
Cocktail -
You can wear a short dress, not too formal. Any high street shop will be suitable for this:
Top Shop
Oasis
Marks and Spencers
Coast (in Debenhams, John Lewis and other department
stores)
Black Tie -
This is more formal. You can wear a short or a long dress for this.
Monsoon
Coast
Karen Millen
John Lewis
Debenhams
White Tie -
You must wear a long dress for this.
Monsoon
Coast
Department stores
I wouldn't recommend trying to fancy a dress up with long gloves or similar - this is a bit of an affectation.
Keep things simple. Consider wearing your hair up in a formal style.
If you wear big dressy earrings, don't wear a big necklace.
Accessorize is great for evening bags and jewellery.
I know if you're not used to formal wear it can all seem a bit intimidating, but it's no different to an ordinary night out. You just get to be a bit more flash about what you wear!

If you are a bit short of money, then buy a simple back dress from any high street store -
£££ - Monsoon, Principles, Coast
££ - Oasis, Warehouse, Topshop, Marks and Spencers
£- Primark, New Look, Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys
And then dress it up with some gorgeous jewellery from places such as -
Accessorize, Dorothy Perkins, Claire's Accessories or Supermarket own brands.
It is easier to buy a dress that won't date that you can wear again and again, by just changing the accessories (shoes, bag, jewellery, hairpiece etc)
Most importantly make sure you feel comfortable in it - can you sit down in it? Can you walk in the shoes? Will you have to keep re-adjusting your hair or necklace or something?

If short on cash - try TK Maxx for a "hit or miss" chance to buy a gown in your preferred style/size.
If you've got enough cash, try Monsoon for very classy gowns.
If it was me, I'd go for a long, plain black dress in velvet. You can dress it with a different colour of hand bag, shoulder shrug and jewellery. Red or white would be classy.
Also, you will be able to wear the dress again and again as it will never go out of fashion and you can change the look by wearing a different colour of accessories.

well i have never been able to afford a formal gown...but one time i went into the bridal shop and they have several gowns for bridesmaids that could be wore at any formal gathering...also if you are low on money go to new and used they have many nice gowns there....or you might look this up in the yellow pages of a place close to where you live....

Just be yourself. Wear a comfortable dress for you. Don't think of what other people will say about you. What is important is you know yourself and is confident of yourself.
