Hmm... well, according to dictionary.com, mistress is: "a woman who has a continuing, extramarital sexual relationship with one man, esp. a man who, in return for an exclusive and continuing liaison, provides her with financial support." and "Mrs." is a title of respect for all the married women. So I guess you're right on the secret lover thing.

Mistress is the old term for a married woman, the term for mistress as we think of it today was then strumpet. It is one of those words that have changed in meaning over the years. Another example is the word Gay - not so many years ago it meant bright and happy and now look at it.

What's the query?
Mr. = Mister, Mrs. = Missus (the man's wife) and the mistress is just "a bit on the side" or "tart" depending on how you feel about it!
