You should never take any meds that is not prescribed to you by your doctor. If you took it once I'm sure your OK...your posting here but, don't take things unless you know you need them and have a doctor give them to you. It can effect your potassium too and that doesn't have to be effected much to even cause irregular heart rhythms.

Diuretics WILL have side effects that may be harmful. Exactly which side effects vary from person to person, so the doc has to find out what happens in your particular case and then co-prescribe one or more other drugs to counter the bad stuff.

A Common myth is that Diuretics will assist in weight-loss. They won't (unless of course you wanna go all the way - straight into that little wooden box six feet under)

Side effects and cautions:

If you do take diuretics that are not prescribed, like to loose weight, make sure you drink plenty of water, or you`ll dehydrate.

Apart from causing dehydration some diuretics could cause your body to excrete important electrolytes such as potassium. A low potassium level would be dangerous and could cause cardiac arrythmias or even cardiac arrest.

In the short term it will dehydrate you causing headaches and weakness (among other things!), in the longer term you could damage your kidneys to the extent that they give up on you...not a place you want to be.
Stop taking them!
