NEW YORK -- Joe Torre's days as the manager of the Yankees appear to be numbered, according to a report in Sunday's Daily News.
The front-page headline of one edition of the newspaper proclaims "Outta Here" with a photo of Torre, whose Yankees were eliminated in the Division Series on Saturday by the Tigers in Detroit.

The newspaper reports that the 66-year-old Torre is expected to be dismissed after the Yankees' latest playoff disaster, with former Yankees player and manager Lou Piniella his likely replacement.

I really don't think that Torre is to blame for the Yankees falling apart this season. As a manager, you have to make game-time decisions, and for most of the season, he was hampered with the decision of not having Matsui or Sheffield, Giambi, and even Damon at times to play every game. On top of that, the pitching rotation that Cashman assembled two years ago was mediocre at best, and it just now caught up to them full circle. During the Tigers series, a fan could see how the old baseball addage "pitching and defense wins game" came to really be the case. Detroit just outpitched the Yankees and the pitchers that they threw at the Yankees just happened to be throwing too good for the best offensive club in the majors. I think that the Yankees will be in for some massive changes during the offseason, with the middle relievers, and starting rotation taking the brunt of George's wrath. However, I really do believe that Torre will be back managing the Yankees again.

Yankee fans are ridiculous. The guy lead the team to SIX World Series appearances in 11 years! In this day and age, that is unbelievable. Nobody could do better than that, no matter what their payroll. The expectation that the Yankees should winner every single year is a little silly. Maybe if they had an owner who cared more about building a TEAM than having a collection of the highest-paid players possible, then the Yankees would be even more successful. But I just don't get firing Joe Torre this year. They won 97 regular-season games. Yeah, they lost in the first round, but that HAPPENS. Should my beloved Twins fire Gardenhire because they got bounced in the first round (we didn't win a single game against the As, remember)? Heck no, he's a fantastic manager who did remarkable things this year with the payroll he was given. Perhaps if Steinbrenner gave Torre a little breathing room and allowed him to actually build and coach a TEAM, rather than accept every high-paid ego out there, the Yankees could win championships every other year with TWICE the Twins' payroll rather than THREE TIMES as much.

I think when a manager is around 10+ years, it often gets difficult. Torre's had a great run and is a Hall of Fame manager, but what happened against Detroit was an embarassment.

I heard Bill Madden of the NY Daily News on the radio this morning, he said Steinbrenner was as mad as he ever was. I can't blame them.

I like Lou Piniella. He groomed A-Rod, so it will be interesting to see what happens to A-Rod.

Joe Torre said he wasn't going to talk to the team before the game to offer encouragement or inspiration because if he had to talk to them, they weren't HIS Yankees, the Yankees he knew to be the winners they are. Bull****! If I were him, I would have shoved confidence & inspiration down their throats all day! What the HECK was he thinking? UGH ! ! ! ! I wanna puke ! ! !
And those stupid "top dogs" in their fancy suits and stuffy limousines have no freakin' idea how to put together a great pitching staff! Serves that a**hole Steinbrenner right for not insisting they trade for some good arms! Of course Abreu was a good, no, great addition to the team, but what they really needed was some good starters & some great relief pitchers to round out the strong bats they already had! George loves to spend money, well, put your money where your mouth is, you old coot! God! What the h*** happened to my sweet Yankees? Looks like someone paid them off to roll over or something!

Idiota Cashman ~ es todo tu culpa, maricon pendejo!
Pinche cabrones no saben nada!
Excuse my spanish!

Hey, if Joe Torre is gone, Yankees fans should be thankful. Mr. Torre is responsible for running the Cardinals into the ground before Mr. Steinbrenner offered him a job. If Torre stays with the Yanks, you're looking at the Yanks being the Kansas City Royals in a couple years.

Mary* - If what you say is true about Joe than I can understand your anger. However I don't think Lou is the answer either. There is a little guy name Joe who just got fired from Florida as I recall that just might fill the bill. I agree that the Yankees need to revamp their entire pitching staff. How bad did they look this week!!!!

that's in simple terms component to the dance between communities and gamers. we've all considered 'cut-off dates' and considered that there is truly no such challenge as a ultimate date, that's in simple terms manuevering for a extra perfect settlement. even with the indisputable fact that, i'd be taken aback to work out Mauer signed to an extension. It would not look like he truly needs to stay in Minnesota, he enjoys the limelight, the intense-existence, and being a media darling. he's angling for brilliant lighting fixtures, and that i'd not be taken aback to work out him finally end up in ny, Boston, Chicago or maybe even la. The Twins might want to be sensible to capitalize on his fee and %. up some major expertise for him, fairly of settling for a first round draft %. next twelve months.

everything must come to and end, but if you want the yanks to become the braves, it is time for Mr. Torre to depart. Things change and so do the Yanks, but along with Joe players as Sheff, Wright, Johnson, Mussina they all had their chance and did not deliever... Giambi shoudl go along with them, Bernie should retire or keep him as a role player, Yanks need new blood, and let the farm system take over along with Jeet, A-Rod, Cano, Matsui, Wang, Cabrera, Damon... just as it did 10 years ago when Pet, Mo, Jeet, Bernie, Posada took over the team along with Tino, Cone, Jimmy Key, O'neil and Boggs.

His days are numbered. If you can't find a way to win at least 1 playoff series with that all star line-up then the figure pointing will start with the manager.

We are all a bit shocked today. Steinbrenner seems to be giving him another shot.

George may be getting more patient in his old age.
