before you close down press ctrl alt delete at the same time then check what applications are running. sounds like you've got a corrupted file

This usually means a background software, erm could be a number of things, but let me use my example that I have sometimes.

I have a firewall and sometimes it doesn't shut down properly, so I have to "End Now" like you have above. Basically, it is a program that for some reason cannot be ended by normal process, and therefore a user, like yourself will have to kill it inorder for the program to terminate.

Do you know what program it is, since usually it will say on the actual pop-up window.

But it doesn't really harm your system. It is probably Windows playing up, like it always does. Best way to cure the problem for sure is a format, but I think for your case I do not think you have to take that extream.

Short of a malfunction, the "end now" request indicates that a program, or something to that affect, continues to stay active past normal shut down procedures. The OS detects this but does not identify within a plausible degree.

Check your programs to see which ones were installed around the same time you began to notice the window. There may be a virus (classified as 'spyware') lurking within. This strain is designed to work undetected within a program, for the purpose of gathering information from the computer and websites visited, in hopes of finding something of value for its creator. They cause no physical harm to the computer/files, this makes them hard to detect during run time. That window during shut down may be an indication of their presence.

A good anti-spyware application will scan all programs and cookies within the computer, and then recommend what action (if any) should be taken.

It depends on what OS you have on your desk top. But it looks like you have a program that is not shutting down on it's own normally. What program does it show as end now? It is probably a corrupt file.

some programs rum in the background and need to ended before you shut down the computer...

they may be corrupted file and may be normal working files like for example if your firewall or antivirus is set to automatic update, it might be updating itself when you try to shutdown your PC... at this moment isuch window will appear :-)

It seems as if you have an application running in the background. Too see what processes are running press CTRL-ALT-DELETE and then view the processes. You will be able to end the process from here.

This is caused by a program running the the background.

It is probably a background file that you are not aware of and apart from clearing your Internet cache and your cookies there is not a lot you can do. Try looking in your start up menu and seeing if there is a "stranger" in there.
