Your problem is well know. Although your exchange is capable of 8Mb, what you are paying for is 8Mb MAX, if you can get it. The speed of your connection is dependent on how good you phone line is and how far from the exchange you are. If you are getting 7Mb from your ISP, I suspect that you have some sort of cache boosting your speed.
As far as downloads go, it is very rare that you get high download speed from one server. If you want better speed then you need to use a download app like bit torrent but I cannot condone illegal file sharing on this forum. But it is possible to get very high download speeds because you can have lots of people contributing a bit all at the same time.
Also, it is possible that your download speed is being throttled by your ISP under the 'fair use' clause. You don't say how much you download so it have no guidance for you here.

Wrong. You are paying for 'up to' 8mb. No one says that you will actually ever get it.

You are sharing the broadband pipe with all your neighbours, so every additional user drops your speed down a bit further.

Your ISP are stating the maximum your line can support given your location, what you get on a daily basis is another thing altogether.

Speed tests are inaccurate.

Your connection speed to one server may be 2mbit, but 8mbit to another. It all depends where the server is located in relation to you, and what connection speed to their ISP they have as well.

7.2mbit seems like a fair level. You won't notice much difference if it went up to 8mbit. Just because your BT exchange can support it, doesn't mean you'll definately be able to get it. Your distance from the exchange DOES make a difference.

You have to remember that if you had a direct link to link connection, you would be downloading at your connection speed. Because you are going across the Internet, you don't get the same speed. It will be slower. I have a 5.5mbit connection, and I'm happy to download at 400-500kb/s.

Carefull with talk talk. Watchdog did a good ten minutes about them and their problems with broadband. Lots of people tried it and could not make it work. Also check out the small print as I think the free broadband may only last for a period

The connection speed is depends on many factors.
It depends on the number of users, the number of seeds, whether the firewall of your pc is on or off......
Something you should bear in mind that you its not possible to get 8Mb/s even you paid the 8Mb/s plan.

wow. 8 mb/s....thats packing speed.
Alot of servers on the internet won't even let you go at that speed. You should probably get a slower connection, because you're wasting your money. Me and My friend Erik are two handsome young males ages fourteen and fourteen.

Which ISP are you with ?, if its talktalk then you will only get 2mbs max until they unbundle the exchange your connected to (Unbundle means for the isp to install their own equipment in your local telephone exchange)
