It WAS Clive Dunn, it was called "Grandad", and it was his only single (thankfully). It was a Xmas hit in 1970. It reached the no.1 spot (3 weeks at the top) after entering the charts on 28/11/70 and stayed in the charts (top 75) for 28 weeks. Here are the lyrics:

I've been sitting here all day thinking
Same old thing ten years away thinking
Now my days are gone, memories linger on
Thoughts of when I was boy

Pennyfarthings on the street riding
Motorcars were funny things, frightning
Bow and hoops and spinning tops
Annie gretzel's lollipops
Comic cuts, all different things

Grandad, grandad you're lovely
That's what we all think of you
Grandad, grandad you're lovely
That's what we all think of you
Grandad grandad

Areoplanes tied up with string flying
Telephones and talking things sighing
A radio and phonograph, Charlie Chaplin made us laugh
Silently falling about
Familiar things I keep around, near me
Memories of my younger days, clearly
Now it's in my mind?
Everyday I find, thoughts of when I was boy

Grandad, grandad you're lovely
That's what we all think of you
Grandad, grandad you're lovely
That's what we all think of you
Grandad, grandad

Grandad, grandad

Grandad, grandad

In the video (if they were called that then), Clive Dunn is in a rocking chair and sings the verses, as though reminiscing to the children. His adoring "grandchildren" gaze up at him and sing the chorus. Clive Dunn is still alive (he was only 48 when Dad's Army began), and is now retired from acting and lives in Portugal.

The lyrics are found on the first webpage, and details of Dunn's career including the Grandad spin-off TV series are shown on the other webpage.

[The song "There's No One Quite Like Grandma" by St. Winifred's School Choir, that a lot of people are getting confused with, entered the charts on 22/11/80, it also reached no. 1, and stayed in the charts for 11 weeks. Even you, dear asker, may be confused - the lyrics of the chorus weren't "Grandad we love you", they were "Grandad you're lovely" but "Grandma we love you".]

That would be ELVIS To answer your question: There's much debate about the Queen vs. Elvis thing when it comes to this song. Many contend that Elvis sang this song many years before it was "written" by Freddie, and that Queen simply did a cover of the song. Others contend that Freddie is the original composer of the song. Having looked at historical footage, I know that Elvis performed this song many years before Freddie is said to have composed it. Thus making the Queen and Cheap Trick versions cover versions.
