get a cheap package charter flight to thailand, no more than 200quid, then get the bus from bangkok to siem reep in cambodia (overnight) for 6 to 10 usd, check out the scene at ankor temples for a day, then get a bus for 6 hours (3-6usd) to phenom penh. either stay the night in PP or get the bus straight thru to saigon (another 6 hours) (and another 3-6 dollars)... you wont find a cheaper way,,, and,,,, you get to spend a day or 2 in cambodia...

I don't know if you're still looking or if there's anyone else looking for similar good deals, but I found a way of getting the cost down!
You gotta use this guy, Henry Rustkirk. It's looks like a load of bullshit, but quite frankly it's not.
I'm going traveling in September and I was looking for hours trying to get the cheapest possible price for my initial flight from London to Vietnam and the cheapest I found was for about £350. Then I came across this guy who's selling some 'insider secret guide' on how to get the price down and thought it's only £20 so what the heck! I bought it and it was pretty useful! He tells you a load of tips, which are pretty simple when you think about it, on how to get your flight costs down.

I'll be going Vietnam, Thailand, Bali, Australia, New Zealand and China, and I reckon I've saved about £400 on flight costs, and this guide on cost me £20. Well worth it!
