The plant itself is irrelevant, as the mantis doesn't ever eat it! However, you must make SURE (100%) that there's NO pesticide residue on the plant! If it's a cutting, make sure that no-one sprayed it - and if it's a pot-plant, make sure it's MORE than a year since it was put in that pot, because most potting composts and stuff you'd use at home have pesticides in, and almost ALL shop-bought pot-plants are in potting compost that's full of it! A plant that was taken from a pot and planted outside will also take a year to leach out the pesticides!

This may not SOUND like a problem - but most of the mantid's food will be EATING a living plant while they wait to be eaten, so if they eat poison it will end up killing your pet mantid!

I had a look on the internet and all the sites just recommend artificial plants for greenery and the odd branch from a tree - sorry, not very helpful!! I did see some pictures where they are perched on raspberry bushes, eucalyptus trees. I just found the following thread from a site too which explains that poisonous plants won't kill a mantis but lack of humidity will??
